Free-meister’s guide to weekend PC gaming
Huddle around all you deal hunters and penny pinchers! You
ain’t got time to splurge a dime? Or just ain’t got dimes to splurge? Either
way neither’s a big enough inconvenience to prevent you from enjoying a great
weekend of video gaming. If you’re looking to play without paying you’re at the
right place—this is the Free-meister’s guide to weekend PC gaming, 16th
August 2014.
ORIGIN
KINGDOMS OF AMALUR: RECKONING (available for 48 Hours)
PLANTS VS ZOMBIES: GARDEN WARFARE (available for 72 Hours)
KINGDOMS OF AMALUR: RECKONING (available for 48 Hours)
PLANTS VS ZOMBIES: GARDEN WARFARE (available for 72 Hours)
If you missed last week’s timed offering on Battlefield
4 that’s just too bad—it was great, but don’t cry over spilled milk. Game Time
is back and there’s a new title on its roster that’s more than worthy of your
consideration; Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare. Garden Warfare’s a
respectable follow up to the popular PvZ franchise that surprised many with its
fluid, not forgetting quirky, take on third-person shooters.
Also Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning’s 48 hour game time
is still valid if you have not used it yet. It’s a brilliantly engrossing title
that was unfortunately dealt a terrible fate post launch, dragging developers
38 Studios down to an early demise. This is a RPG that deserves your full attention—or at
least 48 hours of it.
NOTE: EA’s Game Time runs even when you’re not playing
the game but commences only when you boot the game up for the first time.
SANCTUM 2 (ends 10am PST)
I don’t know much about Sanctum 2 to be honest but it’s
managed to hold its own on Metacritic with generally favorable reviews from
both the critic and user camps. If you’re familiar with Sanctum (the first one)
you should feel somewhat at home with this—save the few contentious tweaks/”upgrades”
that left fans and critics divided. In any case if you were wondering what all
the fuss is about there’s no harm in giving it a go on Steam.
HONOURABLE MENTION
This game went free-to-try last week, and if you’re an
MMO buff or just one perhaps who has a soft spot for the Final Fantasy series,
this might just be that one game you’d want to ply some of your gaming time
into. The offer to sample isn’t limited to this weekend but the trial does run
for 14 days after a player has created an account. If you’ve checked boxes MMO
buff or FF fan do yourself a favor and try this game—it ain’t half bad.
