Product Review: Beexcellent Pro Gaming Headset, GM-1

If you’re in the market for an entry-level gaming headset that is also good-looking flashy, you may want to consider the Beexcellent Pro Gaming Headset (GM-1), except, I won’t recommend it, even with its humble S$21.90 price tag.

Comfortable but Dull

Earmuffs, these are not – but it doesn’t mean you won’t start feeling the heat after prolonged use. In terms of return-on-comfort, you will be getting more value than one would expect from a cheap gaming headset. The adjustable headband is clicky and easy to extend, and it will rest quite easily over any cranium regardless of its size. Additionally, the pillowy, padded ear cups are measured well enough to fit snuggly over any pair of ears. This is, by all accounts, a fairly comfortable headset.

120° Adjustable Microphone

However, where this headset doesn’t shine is in the very place where it should – and that is the ornamental glow around the sides. Beexcellent’s Pro Gaming Headset beams like a 2 watt in a dark tunnel. It’s intimidating, uninspiring, and frankly, rather embarrassing; like a 70-year-old man who’s trying to have a go after a long dip in a frigid lake. This is not a headset you’d want to whip out at gaming parties, unless you’re ready to take a hearty dose of self-deprecating humour at the expense of your “gamer cred”.

Short-lived “Quality”

The GM-1 uses a 40mm driver and outputs sound at a respectable 15Hz to 20KHz, while inputting though its mic of (size) 6.0x5.0mm at a sensitivity of -38 ±3dB. Technical specifications aside, I was happy to report that, for the most part, the product functioned as intended. All it took was a month of moderate use to break it.

Headset interface: USB+3.5mm 4pin

Burning up faster than the tires of a Formula One race car, the Pro Gaming Headset makes waste double time. Within two months, I experience connections issues with the headset jack and its wiring, often resulting in the loss of sound in the left ear speaker. And in the days the followed, I experienced sound leakage issues with output spilling into input, thus creating an uncomfortable feedback loop (an annoying, pitchy echo) for those sharing a channel with me on Discord.

No Bang for Buck

Occasionally, you will find items in the discount bin that return more value than most would expect, but the Pro Gaming Headset (GM-1) is not one of them. In fact, I dare say, the existence of Beexcellent’s headset is marginally unacceptable. It is an unreliable piece of hardware and unless you treat your headsets like disposable underwear, you’ll be better off paying more for a headset that lasts.

In conclusion, Beexcellent’s Pro Gaming Headset (GM-1) is one to avoid. The faithful adage of getting what you paid for doesn’t apply here. If my experience with the hardware is representative or general consumer experience, I can tell you resolutely that your S$21.90 will be better spent elsewhere. This headset is cheap and bad.
