Product Review: VR BOX 2.0 3D Virtual Reality Glasses

The VR Box 2.0 is an entry level VR goggle set, and at S$8.90 you cannot level any criticism at it, especially if it does its job, or can you?

Not Samsung Gear VR, but who cares?

If you are considering the VR Box, you’re probably not serious about virtual reality – which is fine. The VR Box 2.0 is just a placeholder till your enthusiasm for VR builds into something more substantial. For all intents and purposes, the VR Box 2.0 is a very adequate plaything for the novice hobbyist. It does almost everything its more expensive counterparts can but with less depth and objectively less quality built into it.

Word of advice: treat this like you would an expensive piece of hardware because if you can’t take care of this, you are ill advised to purchase anything more complex (like the HTC Vive, God forbid). I’ve left the device on chairs and tables and I’ve watched it fall fair distances. This is not a device that can take a beating – which is something you may want to consider when using it too.

If it fits, it “sits”

Considering comfort and functionary, the VR Box 2.0 can be described as elegantly basic. It’s head strap has on it 3 adjustable bands, the third of which (overhead) is a frivolous addition on most accounts. There are IPD sliders built into the top that allow you to adjust the pupillary distances between the lenses and they work as advertised.

The main chassis that holds your phone requires minor assemblage on first use, fitting the squishy pads so that the clasp holds your phone better in place, but otherwise, the actual usage of the chassis requires little handholding. Most phones fit snuggly within. I was using the HTC 10 which is 5.74 inches (H) and 2.38 inches (W) in size. I suspect that users with larger devices, like the iPhone 6S, may have a tougher time getting their phones in. So be warned – those of you with borderline phablets.

A cool party piece for cheap laughs

You’re not going to wow anyone with this, but thankfully VR, for the most part, remains inaccessible to most people, so whipping this out at a party may earn you some curious looks and willing playmates. Put on an interactive 360 video or load up a simple VR tech demo – there’s plenty of those around, and people will laugh, they’ll dance, and some may even stumble clumsily as more hilarity ensues.

TL;DR

With 50 reviews and an average of 4/5 star ratings, there is a tangible air of customer satisfaction toward this product. The VR Box 2.0 is your gateway, tie-over piece of hardware before the real deal. If you’re not willing to commit more than $10 on a VR headset but want the novelty of owning one, this is it.
